Celebrate Generosity on Giving Tuesday: A Day to Make an Impact
Each year, on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, people worldwide unite to celebrate Giving Tuesday—a global movement dedicated to inspiring generosity in all its forms. Established in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, Giving Tuesday was created to shift the focus from holiday consumerism to meaningful acts of giving.
Whether through donations, volunteering or acts of kindness, Giving Tuesday empowers individuals, businesses and organizations to give back in ways that resonate personally. The impact is profound, with billions of dollars raised annually to support causes ranging from education and environmental conservation to mental health and humanitarian relief.
In recent years, Giving Tuesday has redefined the power of philanthropy by:
- Inspiring over $3.1 billion in donations in the U.S. alone (2022 data)
- Mobilizing millions of volunteers to support nonprofits
- Encouraging innovative giving methods, including matching gifts and recurring donations
Beyond financial support, Giving Tuesday fosters a shared sense of community, bringing people together around values of generosity and empathy. It also provides nonprofits an opportunity to engage new supporters, broaden their impact and inspire meaningful change.
This Giving Tuesday, consider how you can make a difference:
- Donate: Choose a cause or organization that aligns with your values and make a financial contribution.
- Volunteer: Lend your time to a local nonprofit or community initiative.
- Spread the Word: Share your giving story on social media to inspire others.
- Match Donations: Encourage additional impact by matching contributions or asking your employer to participate.
For example, at the Blank Family of Businesses, the Good Company Matching Gifts program will match donations made by associates to eligible nonprofits for contributions ranging from $10 to $5,000, making every dollar go further.
Several foundation leaders have shared the organizations they’ll support this Giving Tuesday and throughout the year:
