Powering the Future: How Regional Electricity Markets Support Reliable, Clean Energy in the West

Western Resource Advocates (WRA) is an environmental nonprofit that focuses on state-level and regional climate and clean energy priorities in the Interior West, including Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. WRA was founded more than 30 years ago and its mission is to protect the West now and for future generations by focusing on the advancement of clean energy and the protection of air, land, water and wildlife.
Through collaboration with utilities and stakeholders, including increasing engagement with Tribal governments and utilities, WRA is building support for regional electricity markets in the West. These markets can facilitate an efficient, effective way to meet the increasing demand for reliable, affordable and clean energy. The group is also working to ensure that new markets have rules in place that support clean energy deployment and allow utilities to comply with Western states’ diverse energy policies. To support this work, the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation awarded a $3 million grant to WRA in 2024.
“WRA envisions a future where vibrant communities run on clean energy, rivers are thriving and distinct landscapes are protected, healthy and accessible,” said Crystal Parrish, WRA associate director of foundation relations. “Thanks to support from the Arthur M. Blank Family Foundation, WRA is expanding its capacity to accelerate and deepen our engagement efforts with Western Tribes, Pueblos and Tribal utility authorities. This body of work will enable WRA to develop policy proposals that are informed by Tribal perspectives, needs and concerns.”
This Environment grant aligns with the foundation’s Energy strategy, which identifies regional electricity markets as key mechanisms for accelerating the deployment of clean energy.
